| The Rough Truffles is a relatively new
choir, created in 1999 as a less formal alternative to the traditional
choral group format. We are a community choir, open to anyone who
simply enjoys singing - there are no auditions, no requirement to
read music and no experience necessary.
The choir has been led from its beginning by Pili Araujo and we
learn our songs by ear and sing unaccompanied. We sing an eclectic
mix of music from all around the world, in most cases in the original
language; the common thread is that the songs should be fun to sing.

After our first year we started to perform occasionally in public
and now regularly work towards half a dozen or so events a year.
In true community choir style we are equally at home performing
in pubs, churches, community halls, in the streets and in Belper's
River Gardens.
The Rough Truffles meet on Monday evenings between 8.15pm and 10pm
in the Queens Head, Chesterfield Road, Belper. New members are always
very welcome – just turn up and join in. For further information
use the 'contact us' facility at the top of this page.
And our leader.....
PILI ARAUJO
Pili is our talented and enthusiastic leader and hails from Galicia
in NW Spain. She studied music from the age of 9 and specialised
in singing in her later teens. In her native country Pili sang and
played accordion in a professional band and led her first mixed
choir in 1994.
After moving to England in 1996 Pili didn't take long to involve
herself in the local music scene and was a founder member of Derby's
Kaleidoscope Choir. When the Rough Truffles was founded 4 years
ago Pili became the first leader and has remained so since then
with just the smallest of breaks when her two children were born.
Her belief that singing should be fun and a totally positive experience
rubs off on all who sing under her.
Pili will be the Musical Director of this year's Festival and will
lead the massed choir singing in Belper's Memorial Gardens.
Unfortunately for the Rough Truffles Pili is due to move back to
her home town in Spain shortly after the Festival and we are currently
seeking a replacement leader.
